So, this is my first attempt in writing a true blog post on relevant topics. I spent forever avoiding this, as I hate being inconsistent. You know what I mean right? You write a blog post for October, and then November. “Great job,” you think! Then the holidays happen, and that was 2017 and now its 2020. I’ve seen a lot of your websites, I know it’s not just me. Or do you fall prey to doing all your marketing on a recurring basis, with success I might add, so you get too busy onboarding all that new business? You blink and then wonder what happened to all the new business constantly rolling in.
That’s the peaks and valleys of small business, my entrepreneurial friend. You work on marketing and sales, have success, get busy, creating a peak in your business productivity. That business peak causes you to slack off on your sales and marketing, causing the coming valley. The only solution is consistency, but that is far easier said than done.
As an internal joke, we started a Teams channel called “Sh!t that Allen says” and a lot of the stuff that I say often is R&D, that’s “Rip-off and Duplicate” (and it’s already in the channel). The one most relevant to the message of Consistency in Marketing, is “Perfection is the enemy of progress.” The more perfect this blog post has to be, the less likely I am to get it done, and the even less likely I am to be able to keep it going in the weeks ahead, especially as my travel schedule kicks back into gear. So here I am, writing directly into WordPress. No DIVI theme. No picture added. Just getting it done.
The simplification helps; it’s a leaders job to simplify (also in the ‘Allen says” channel). But failing to plan is planning to fail and nothing ever goes according to plan (I always say both together, and yes, also in the channel), so I did take the extra step of creating a ticket template in our ConnectWise Manage that fires every week. When I’m working tickets, I will see my blog post ticket and have a place to record my time and remind me to get it done. What will not surprise you is that I also took the time to write an SOP on how we get this blog posted and what we are going to do with it.
The moral of the story is consistency pays dividends and simplifying your goals and actions with a corresponding basic plan will go a long way to erasing the valleys in your business productivity!
